Configure Visual Studio 2008 to connect to your Team Foundation Server

Note: The information in this article applies to Team Foundation Server 2010.

Assuming that you have already installed Visual Studio 2008 on your workstation, perform the following steps:
  1. Install the Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Explorer.
  2. Reapply Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (Installer).
  3. Download and install the Visual Studio Team System 2008 Service Pack 1 Forward Compatibility Update for Team Foundation Server 2010 (Installer).
To connect to your Team Foundation Server from Visual Studio 2008, the following steps should be taken:
  1. Open the Tools menu and click on the "Connect to Team Foundation Server..." option.
  2. Click on the "Servers..." button.
  3. Next, click the "Add..." button.
  4. Supply https://tfsXX.discountasp.net:443/tfs/YourCollectionName for the server name field where "tfsXX" is the Team Foundation Server for your account and "YourCollectionName" is the collection name.

    *NOTE - If you need to find out what server you're hosted on or need to obtain the name of your collection, access the Account Information page in your Control Panel.
  5. When prompted, supply your sign-in credentials.
  6. Click on the "Close" button.
  7. Select the projects that you have access to and then click on the "OK" button.
NOTE: If you are a project manager that will be creating new Team Projects or perform other administrative tasks and only have Visual Studio 2008 available, it is highly recommend that you have the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Shell that's available by downloading and install the Microsoft Visual Studio Team Explorer 2010 - ISO on your system.
